As of today, you no longer need an invite to take advantage of Google Voice in all its glory. When you establish a free account with your Google log in, you can choose to either keep your current number, upgrade it with Google Voicemail, or obtain a new main Google Voice number, which can access your cell, home and office lines as well as a desktop VoIP setup, while also providing free web-based texting and inexpensive international calls. Number portability, and no-setup web calls are also expected in the near future.
