A 59 year old man in Gaston, NC needed medical care for a bad back, sore foot and a growth on his chest. However, he had no way to afford it and decided that the only way he was going to get any care was to go to prison. That said, he walked into an RBC bank and demanded $1 from the teller, explaining that he was unarmed and that he’d be waiting for the police in a chair near the entrance.

“It wasn’t done for the monetary value. It was done for medical reasons. I went in knowing i was going to jail.”

The man, who claims he is “of sound mind but not so much sound body” was charged with larceny from a person, which carries a lesser penalty than bank robbery. His bail was reduced to $2,000, but since he’s being treated by doctors he’s not planning on bailing himself out.

Obviously, there’s a lot of social commentary here, but we’ll leave that to everyone else. Hit the jump to watch the man explain his motivation for the crime.
